I want to run a 220VAC single phase line 60 feet through my attic to my garage. For such a long run should I use 12 or 10 GA? Should I run it in conduit or is free air OK. I will be running an air compressor only off of it.

60 feet is not long at all. But by code even if in an attic should not lay right on top of the ceiling joist. Could just run it in conduit once in the attic.
