I would like to build a pergola over my drive without using any middle supports that might get hit. Proposed structure is 30′ x 34′. How can this be done with wood or will I need steel beams?

Using a steel beam would be way involved and look like shit, not really an option. You’ll be best just to use 6×6″ post in concrete. Depending on the area you live in you may need a permit with plans.
