Vintage cookbook shelving

Please briefly explain why you feel this question should be reported.

I’ve got one of those old open shelves for cookbooks at the end of one counter. There is a bit of countertop on top of it but can I safely remove the shelving without compromising the bit of counter above? Does the shelving help hold that part of the counter up? I would think not but I’m scared to remove it before I know.
