I’ve got one of those old open shelves for cookbooks at the end of one counter. There is a bit of countertop on top of it but can I safely remove the shelving without compromising the bit of counter above? Does the shelving help hold that part of the counter up? I would think not but I’m scared to remove it before I know.

Without seeing it I would say so. But seeing it is better. Post a picture here so I can see it.
