I want to buy a window unit ac for approximately 1500 sq ft. Will changing a 120 volt plug to a 220 cause a major problem for my 1986 house? Thank you for your help.

Please briefly explain why you feel this answer should be reported.
Yes, big time, don’t do it. The reason is, I’m sure there are other outlets on that same circuit. So by doing that will make your now existing outlets or worse, 220 volts.
You’ll want to run a completely new circuit to the panel.
